March 10th, 2022 – Update

One of the final pieces of the SAPCC Transportation Committee’s placemaking project is a mural installation on the corner of the Murphy Rigging building at Carleton and Territorial.  The mural will be designed over the next month and you’ll see the creation go up during the month of May (weather permitting).

Residents ranked three artist applications during the month of February and the St. Anthony Park Community once again chose artist Kada Goelen (of Kada Creative) to design and paint the mural.  If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Kada was the artist who designed and implemented the community street painting on Seal and Territorial in May as an early piece of this placemaking project.

The goal will be for the mural to be in place in time for the Chroma Zone Mural and Art Festival this summer.  We’re looking forward to seeing her creativity shine in this mural.

October 18th, 2021 – Update

Crosswalk and Street Painting Completed

If you’ve driven on Territorial in the past few weeks, you may have slowed down to see the newly painted crosswalk or the street painting outside of the Seal Hi-Rise.  These placemaking measures have been the work of the SAPCC Transportation Committee in order to let traffic know to slow down – this is a place where people live!

St. Paul artist Tomasina Topbear and friends painted a creative crosswalk at Carleton Street next to the Ray apartment building.  Her design is a pattern based on the Morning Star, which also features prominently in her Unci Maka mural a half block east.

In addition,  Artist Kada Goalen designed and implemented  a street painting where residents  painted native Minnesotan plants & animals (and a Seal requested by the Seal Hi-Rise residents).  This community event happened on the rain date of October 3rd – thanks to all who participated to make this collaborative painting happen!

Next up for the Territorial Street projects will be two ADA-compliant benches that will be designed and executed by a local artist. The goal will be to have these benches installed by the end of the year.

If you’re interested in being involved in more placemaking projects like this one, consider joining one of our committees – each one is doing work towards making St. Anthony Park an even better place to live and work in community!

August 31st, 2021

The St. Anthony Park Community Council is thrilled to announce we have been selected to receive a 2021 AARP Community Challenge grant, as well as funds from the U of M Good Neighbor Fund.

The Transportation Committee will be working with local sculptors to design and build two ADA-approved benches along Territorial Road and work with residents to design street paintings in the area. Adjacent to a newly installed sidewalk between Seal and Carleton streets on the north side of Territorial, this project will help complete the process of saying to neighborhood traffic that this is a place where people live. Slow down and stop for pedestrians.
