D10/12 Community Organizer

District 10 Como Community Council and District 12 St. Anthony Park Community Council are seeking a qualified, energetic person to serve both organizations as Community Organizer. The initial purpose of this role is to perform community outreach to renters and students in the two districts.

Job Responsibilities:

Outreach (D10 and D12)

Must understand the transformational possibilities of community engagement, conduct face-to-face conversations at doors and on sidewalks, and accurately capture and report results of those conversations.

  •     Meet with residents from selected rental communities to determine priorities and issues on which Districts can partner with these neighborhood members.
  • Contact schools within the Districts. Assess willingness to partner with Districts on:
    • A neighborhood youth summit.
    • Volunteer activities within the neighborhood.
    • Identifying ways the neighborhood could support school initiatives.
    • Strengthening relationships among the schools and between the schools and the District Council.
  • Develop and maintain database of rental communities and key school personnel in Districts 10 and 12. Database should include:
    • Contact information (residents and management) for each community.
    • Schedule of tenant meetings, social activities, or other events in each community
    • Willingness to post fliers about District Council activities.
    • Willingness to distribute District Council welcome packets to new residents.
    • Willingness to host District Council board members for meet-and-greet dinners and discussions.
  • Facilitate the flow of information among residents, businesses, neighborhood groups, and local levels of government per direction of Executive Director.
  • Through outreach and discussions, identify:
    • Community members with potential for leadership roles in committees, board, or initiatives.
    • Barriers that hinder involvement of renters and students in neighborhood activities.
    • How District Councils could improve communication and its organizational relationship with renters and students in the community.
  • Consult regularly with the executive director and/or key board members on results of outreach and organizing work.
  • Manage participation by volunteers.
  • Coordinate programs, activities, and events for projects as they arise.
  • Manage interns assigned to programs you manage.

Committee Support (D12)

  • Support four committees: Land Use, Equity, Transportation, and Environment.
  • Confirm agendas with committee chairs at least 1 week in advance of meetings.
  • Send out meeting reminders with agendas (plus attachments such as variance request for Land Use) three days in advance of meeting dates.
  • Follow up on action items with appropriate contacts, including sending resolutions from the Board, check in on committee actions as needed.

Communication (D12)

  • Write, edit, and send a monthly e-newsletter on the 15th of every month, featuring local organizations/projects (including Community Garden, Transition Town, SAPAS, other partners), updates from committees and Board, neighborhood events. Maintain newsletter archive on the Council website.
  • Maintain multiple email and social media accounts.
  • Write and submit Council news to the Bugle by the first week of the month for the following month’s issue.
  • Post notifications to social media accounts and neighborhood lists (Yahoo, Nextdoor) for all committee and Board meetings and special events.
  • Maintain the Council website with events, committee meetings/agendas and project information, archives of committee and Board minutes.

Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Experience in meeting and event management required and a proven ability to successfully organize events is highly desirable
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated capacity to take initiative and work with a high sense of urgency
  • Outstanding thought leadership and passion for diversity and inclusion; demonstrated effectiveness leading diversity and inclusion related initiatives and programs
  • Excellent project management, analytical and organizational skills
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively, while balancing a variety of priorities and workload
  • Demonstrated experience using facts and analytics to understand trends and develop solutions that lead to measurable impact on an organization
  • Be able to enhance diversity and inclusion in the community council to support the strategic growth of the nonprofit

Preferred Qualifications: Skills in social media, fundraising, Word Press

Time Commitment

This is a part-time position of 30 hours/week: 10 of those hours will be committed to District 10; 20 hours to District 12. There is an expectation of some overlap in duties.
